Love thy Greens: Farm Update

Asparagus soup, couscous salad, sweet potatoes with tahini dressing, fresh rhubarb jam and bread, and gooseberry currant thumbprint cookies. All this and more was shared at the May Garden Morning and potluck at the close of last month. Big hurray to the folks who joined us in getting the big push of plants in the ground.  We transplanted 1,000+ vegetables and many new cut flowers such as echinops, safflower, Didiscus, and a long stemmed marigold. Garden Mornings and potlucks are open to the entire community and our next one is Saturday, June 20th.

Late May is the biggest transplanting time of the year. Shareholders planting winter squash and pie pumpkins in tilled areas, between living aisles of oats and field peas.

If you are looking to unwind, a stroll around the gardens may do the trick. It’s bursting with promise and diversity right now and in the last few days we’ve seen multiple fledging birds, turtles laying eggs, and newly blooming peonies and false indigo adding to the riot of lupines. Farm shareholders are always welcome to linger in the gardens and around the fields. When doing so, keep in mind: have dogs on leashes, watch your step in terms of garden hoses and uneven ground, keep children from lingering in the driveway/parking area, and enjoy yourself!

Lupines are in full celebration mode

We are feeling good about where we are with the plantings and expect a burst of growth after the heat hits following this rain. We’ve just marked the kale, rainbow chard, spicy mixed greens, a new planting of arugula, and head lettuce for harvest. Find full list of crops available below. Soon there will be scallions, rosemary and basil available! There’s many other crops planted that take longer to mature because we eat the “fruit” rather than the leaf. July and beyond will hold cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, and much more.

There’s a flat and curly kale available now. For both varieties, harvest 3-4 largest , outer leaves from each plant. Keep the center intact so it continues to grow throughout the season.
