Sept 21st Farm Update

We started to harvest the leeks this month and they are stocked in the shareholder fridge. You might notice the leeks have been cut shorter than in years past. For the first time in our 12 years growing here, there’s widespread infestation of an insect pest that burrows in the upper greens. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll make the best of it by trimming off the tops. Leeks are in the allium family with garlic and onions, and can be used in any recipe that calls for onions. Potato leek soup is wonderful, but there’s many other ways to use this cold hardy vegetable.

Presenters sharing their experiences during the tour about homesteading at the farm last Friday included shareholder Phil LaMarche and Erica LaFountain of Potsdam. T.he final event here for the Grow and Tell project for 2021 is on October 9th. The focus is seed preservation!

We are excited to announce there’s a date set for our Swap it! Community Trade event held annually at the farm. All are welcome to join us on Sunday, October 10th, 1:00-2:30pm. We’ll have an open air tent. If the event is new for you, give it a try! Bring something you grew, made or created to trade with others who come. See full details here.

Here’s a photo from the 2019 swap, former apprentice Alex trading her art for Roman’s ambitious baking. The most common question we get is, “What should I bring?” Is there something you especially like to make, such as food or art? Or perhaps you have surplus or something such as flower tubers or perennial plants. The quirky joy of the swap is the great variety of different items that people bring. The sky is the limit as long as it is something you grew, made or created.

There’s ingredients available to make tomato based salsas as well as salsa verde with green tomatillos. We like to halve and roast the tomatillos first before adding the remaining ingredients, in our case onion, garlic, cilantro, hot peppers, cumin, salt, lime juice. Then blend to preferred texture.
