Farm Happenings
The hard frost happened and zapped many tender plants. It was a pleasure to see so many households stocking up on beans and enjoying another bouquet from the flower garden before the chill set in. There’s still beaucoup groundcherries that survived under the insulation of their own plant mass.
There’s a lovely new bed of spinach available and all the fixings for salsa verde (tomatillos, cilantro, peppers, and onions)!
littleGrasse is a community farm as you well know. In addition, it’s our home and the place where we grow as much of our own food as we can. This time of year, we keep busy putting up the harvest. We mention this, as there are often crops in the far flung fields which you may recognize and wonder when they will “be in the share”. For some items, such as chickpeas and quinoa, they are grown for the farmstead, but not for all the members. Fruit is another example. It’s not that we want to leave you out- some items are a challenge to grow in the North Country or are too laborious to produce at scale for the whole group. We communicate about what IS included on the share description page of the website. We hope that you can enjoy these crops as beautiful specimens in the field (or on social media), and be okay knowing there are a few items grown at the farm that are not part of the share.
Enter the free Pumpkin Contest for a chance to win one of three large decorative pumpkins. Details will be sent early this week to your email!
Tips for Success
- To harvest spinach, cut the largest outer leaves and don’t cut the smaller center leaves which continue to grow to full size.
