10/30/2022 Farm Update

This is the final weekly update of the season. We will send a couple updates during the winter, along with the invitation to fill out the end of season survey. We try to get the share sign up information out as quickly as possible, it’s often in late January or February,

Bonus week of gleaning! The share officially ends tomorrow October 31st, but the weather is mild and there’s still a bit of food in the field such as lettuce in the greenhouse, leeks in Irene’s field and kale. There’s also a tray of mixed garlic, you can sample a few new varieties to close out the year. This gleaning time extends through the end of the day next Sunday, November 5th.

There’s a mix of garlic left over from the Garlics of the World trial planting, find them in the wash stand to try a new variety.

New growing ground for 2023!

We took a trip to Madrid for brunch this morning at The Blue House. We’ve known the chef and co-owner Josh for many years- we swap recipe ideas- especially preserved creations. He loves the purple daikon we grow and other hard to find items. He sent an extra plate out to our table today of fried rice that included house made kimchi and flecks of cured goose breast. When I was younger I thought these unusual dishes were snooty and beyond reach. Now that we have such a richness of items from our soil and the region, playing with flavor and texture combinations brings pizazz to the kitchen and makes me in awe of the ingredients, and the cultural traditions from which they spring.

With the thousands of hours we’ve spent together this season- planting, building, cooking- this is the only photograph of the three of us together. I guess it’s a sign of autumn to slow down and take stock. It was a blast to work alongside one another to crank out alot of nourishing food for our shareholders.

See you in the spring!
