Farm Happenings

Red fife wheat experiment

We’ve been lucky to have two curious apprentices here at the farm. Ethan has decided to postpone his return to college and stay at littleGrasse through the end of the season. Last week, Eric packed up from his temporary housing down at Flip’s family camp and has gone on the explore North Country agriculture and community at Birdsfoot. Before the transition, he was excited to see a side project with Bob come to fruition: last week he harvested, threshed and winnowed his first crop of wheat. Exciting stuff for a baker!

Crop Report:

  • We harvested the onions and will begin to distribute them this week. They are healthy, yetsmaller than average.
  • The green basil is not doing well- the rainy weather brought the airborne disease downy mildew. There’s is still salvageable leaves, but we may need to remove the plants at some point. The purple basil is still good and has a similar flavor.

Join us in the gardens any Wednesday 5:30-7:30pm or Saturday 9am-1pm.

Tips for Success

  • We pick tomatoes before they are fully ripe because their flavor and color continue to develop, If you select a range of ripeness on each visit, you’ll have fruits to enjoy over the course of several days. Also, don’t let the cracks on the tops of the heirloom varieties scare you off, cut out the blemishes and dig in- the flavor is worth it!
