Farm Happenings
Week of mulching: Mulching is great, it helps keep water and nutrients in the ground, reduces weeds and adds organic matter to the soil. We mulched many crops this week including basil, cucumbers, squash, flowers and more.
Scapes are here! Ready to roll up your sleeves and try scapes in new ways? They will be available for 1-2 weeks, don’t be shy, take a bunch and experiment. They last several weeks in the fridge and the garlic harvest is over a month away. Their mild garlic flavor means you can pack a lot into recipes.
Heat and greens: We are in a drought and working hard to keep the crops watered. When it gets hot, plantings of mixed greens don’t last as long, as their natural reaction is to start seed production, or “bolt”. Often the flavor of the leaves changes as all the energy goes into seed production. A spring planting of spinach could last over a month, in the heat of summer, it’s more short-lived. There are later plantings of all the items currently available in the field, but we we expect a lull coming for head lettuce and spinach.
Crop forecasting: In a couple weeks we will be adding peas, summer squash, zucchini and Chinese cabbage to the harvest list.
Join us in the field any Wednesday evening 5:30-7:30pm or Saturday anytime 8:30am-1pm. It’s a good opportunity to meet others, learn more about how we do things at the farm and get some exercise. All ages and abilities welcome.
