6/30/2023 Farm Update

Garden Morning tomorrow July 1st!
Garden mornings are usually on the last Saturday of the month but we’ve had two very rainy ones, and so we’re inviting folks to enjoy teach other’s good company while helping us get caught up on some essential weeding and mulching. Join us for activities in the field 9am-noon and/or the yummy potluck lunch to follow.

We pulled the protective row cover off the brussels sprouts in the back field to inspect and weed the crop. The plants are growing vigorously.

For many crops, especially greens, having a fresh supply requires planting multiple times throughout the spring and summer, aka succession planting. Here’s a couple hundred more head lettuce that we started in flats near the beginning of June and transplanted into the field during our cloudy weather this week.

Seeding the next round of head lettuce (and more) in soil blocks in the greenhouse.

The newest addition to the farm is a golden retriever / english shepard mix, probably named Millie! She’s an excitable yet still sleepy ball of fur that we’re training to keep deer and nuisance animals from the fields. Our beloved 11 year old dog Rye is starting to show her the ropes and has tolerated her nippy enthusiasm remarkably well.

Tips & Flavor Notes
  • The beets are marked for harvest. There’s a limit on the crop which is always marked in red on the whiteboard in the share room. It’s 5 beets per share which means that every visit to the farm, while supplies last, you can harvest up to 5 for every share in your household..
  • The ever popular sweet Italian basil is ready. To harvest, pinch or cut the top paired leaves off the plant (rather than the entire stalk). Harvesting in this way encourages the plant to grow more new leaves for a bushy, abundant yield.
  • It’s great to see that some folks are taking the food waste buckets! There’s lots more in the share room, fill ’em up with scraps from your household and return to the farm for us to compost.
  • We are available to assist with harvest Saturdays 9am or Wednesday 5:30pm. Call or text 315-854-5395.

Apologies if there was any confusion, we’ve marked the kale area differently now. There are three beds, each with a different variety. From left to right: the smooth leafed Madely, the pebbled Lacinato or Dino, and the curly Vates. There’s now a pink flag in each bed, so you can choose your preferred variety and start your harvest wherever you find the flag for that variety. Remember to harvest the largest, lowest leaves and leave the small center leaves to grow.

This list and availability are subject to change, check the share whiteboard at the start of every visit. If you are unsure about how to harvest: ask us! In person, via text or email.
