In the coming weeks we will be distributing bulk amounts of several crops to families who signed up for year-round shares. It’s a gratifying time to revel in the harvest and know there’s food on hand for the coming bitter months. As with many other veggie successes this season, the fall roots (carrots, potatoes, beets and rutabage) are doing very well. We also have great yields on winter squashes including butternut, acorn and delicata. It was not an abundant storage cabbage year, but we WILL have our annual group sauerkraut making session. This is optional and is a quick and pleasant way to get cabbage all prepped and salted together. We will have brussels sprouts though.
We will refer to the bulk preferences sheet filled out by each year-round shareholder at the start of the season. This helps us know what you like and the quantities you are comfortable handling for storage and processing. Our goal is to feed, not to overwhelm, so we like to know what items each household is most interested in using.
This week we will be distributing an array of winter squash and baking pumpkins as well as Red Norland and Adirondack Blue potatoes. The potatoes will be dry and unwashed and the other roots will be washed.
