We’ve been orienting new shareholders to the garden this week and it’s time to invite back the whole group. It’s exciting to see the shareholders enjoying the fields again. The springtime has a charm with new changes by the day.

We’re keeping busy- each week brings a new crop to direct seed or transplant. The first planting of potatoes went in this week, along with another full bed of spinach and greens. There’s already onions happily growing in the fields, along with young brussels, broccoli, cabbage, scallions and lettuce.

Tips for Success

• Spotlight on Arugula– Here’s our first video of the year! It’s 3 minutes long and you’ll learn about how arugula grows, tips for harvest and use.
• Try taking a photo of the whiteboard in the wash stand so you can refer back to it while out in the field.
• Only harvest what your household can use fresh in your daily meals. The Free Choice Share is not intended for bulk/storage/preservation purposes.

Crops marked with a black asterisk on the whiteboard use the flag system. To harvest, first find the wooden crop sign, then look for the orange flag. Start your harvest just after the orange flag. After harvest, move the flag to where you stopped. Also, in the field are pre-measured wooden sticks to show amount per share, (ex. currently spinach is limited to 18″ per share). Households with two shares have the option to double the quantity.

• 

  If there is a limitation on a crop, it will be written in red on the whiteboard, next to that specific crop. For example, the greens are currently limited, but when they are more abundant, the limitation will be removed.

The 8 O’clock Ranch freezer is full! There’s a mix of pork, beef, sausages in there and they re-stock weekly. The freezer is self-serve and everyone must write their order details and payment method on white sheet next to freezer. Payment methods include check, exact cash, Venmo and PayPal. There are copies of their full product list to the left of the freezer. You can order other cuts to be delivered to the bottom drawer of the littleGrasse freezer.
