10/4/2020 Farm Update

Pumpkin winnas! Great job guessing to the Dalton, Armendariz-Huang and Townsend families. The final pumpkin weights were 81, 41.5 and 22.25 pounds and two guesses were within a quarter pound! We have our thinking caps on for other interactive and fun stuff to incorporate into the 2021 calendar at littleGrasse.

Stock up on greens this week: the head lettuce and bok choy are at their peak. If you are new to beet greens, try this relative of spinach in a sautee, soup or quiche. Beet greens are high in calcium and vitamin K and there’s lots available in the field.

Tips for Success

  • Is there something wrong with that blotchy lettuce? Nope, they are a delicious Austrian variety

    Juicy lettuce called Speckled Trout

called Speckled Trout. The leaves of this romaine type are tender and mild. The second head lettuce variety available is an all green butterhead type.

  • Pie pumpkins are edible beyond dessert. Simply cut in half, scoop out seeds, bake for around 75 minutes at 375 degrees, then use tender flesh in curries, quick breads, soups, or yes- PIE. There’s two varieties available, New England Pie is the bright smooth orange one and Winter Luxury has the rougher netted skin. The seeds are also edible, by rinsing free from flesh, seasoning and roasting in oven. The pumpkins should last for several weeks at room temperature.
