Farm Happenings
In the true spirit of sharing the risk and the bounty inherent in our model of community supported agriculture, we are extending the share season one full week! Instead of the share ending Sunday October 31st as originally planned, shareholders can continue to visit the farm to pick up food through dusk Sunday November 7th.
There’s still multiple bushels of ancho poblano peppers available and the homestead shares have gotten their fill. If any shareholder is interested in several pounds for a project (freezing, roasting, hot sauce, etc.) let us know.
Now that the frost has occurred, there will be less items available in total, but great crops are still coming out of the ground including this weeks Brussels sprouts and soon, orange carrots and parsnips.
The turnout was so good yesterday we got the main crop of garlic and shallots both planted and mulched. Over 20 people participated in this fall tradition, thank you!
Yesterday’s garlic planting had a decadent twist, with a shareholder bringing fresh cinnamon rolls still warm from the oven. Thanks Christine!!
Tips for Success
- This is the final week for meats from 8 O’clock Ranch. If there’s anything you’d like to buy, remember to visit the freezer by Sunday 10/31.
- Brussels sprouts: The greens on the top of the stalk are edible, add to stirfry or other recipe with cooked greens. Also, you can snap the sprouts off the stalk while still at the farm and deposit the empty stalk in the wheelbarrow to the right of the washstand. We’ll compost those.
Brussels Sprouts are a very cool crop, growing their mini heads all the way up the stalk. They are one of the annual vegetable crops that takes longest to reach maturity and have been growing since April!
