For those who signed up for the you-pick greens, it’s picking time! It’s our trial year for this share and we have a handful of folks who expressed interest. It’s an effort to extend the fresh eating once the weekly veggie distributions wrap up. All shareholders of this type have access to the greens in the field from now until Thanksgiving! The items available have varying degrees of frost tolerance, with the kale and spinach being the hardiest. Some items are under the white row cover to extend their harvest window.
The items are all located in the micro and herb beds near the barn. They are marked with an orange flag tied to atop a 4′ white stake. The harvest knives and scissors are just inside the share room door to the right on the black shelf. Please limit harvesting to the DAYLIGHT HOURS. Tip: On days after a freeze, it will be easier to harvest later in the day, after the temperature has warmed some. You can harvest in the morning, but it will be chilly and the leaves may be frozen.
ITEMS AVAILABLE
green and red butterhead mini lettuces
bok choy
dino and premier kale (most abundant of all items)
kohlrabi
parsley
rosemary
sage
spinach
Thank you mom, for turning me onto massaged kale salad. It’s deliciousness and versatility are well-documented at this link here. There is ample kale, feel free to harvest a larger quantity to blanch and freeze packs.
For the spinach you are harvesting individual leaves whereas for the mini head lettuces and bok choy, you can cut at the soil level and remove the whole head. The lettuces heads are small and multiple can be harvested at a time.
As ever, let us know if you have any questions.
